HOSTING
My website is hosted on Bluehost.com. I researched companies and selected Bluehost because of cost, they support WordPress and they have excellent 24/7 support which I knew I would need since I was relatively new to this world last year. My site domain name, jessicakunkel.com is registered through Bluehost.
WORDPRESS
My site is built using WordPress which is a free and open-source content management system written in hypertext preprocessor language (HTTP) and paired with a MySQL (Structured Query Language) database with supported HTTPS. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system, referred to within WordPress as “Themes.” According to colorlib.com, around 810 million websites use WordPress as of 2023.
SITE THEME
The site theme is OceanWP. I watched a tutorial explaining this theme and decided it would be a good fit for my site. Here are some features of the OceanWP theme.
SITE PLUG-INS
I am using the following plug-ins on my site.
WordPress Classic Editor Version 1.6.2 – which allows me to edit the site without using the WordPress Block editor.
Elementor Version 3.11.1 – the Elementor website builder lets WordPress users create and edit websites with a responsive drag-and-drop technique. Elementor is offered in a freemium version and Elementor Pro. I read blogs and watched tutorials about this platform and determined it was an excellent tool to use on my site. Another reason I selected Elementor is the expansive template library available.
Favicon by RealFaviconGenerator Version 1.3.27 – to create my site favicon.
FONTS
I selected the Playfair Display font for all of the header text to help convey my brand. Playfair Display Serif Font is a gorgeous condensed serif typeface that includes 12 fonts, from regular to bold. The high contrast between thick and thin strokes gives a very stylish look and is ideal for headlines, headers, logos, labels, packaging, postcards, presentations, magazines, invitations, etc.
I selected Poppins for the body text on the site because it is the pure geometric sans-serif typeface. This typeface, has beautiful eye-catching curves and is very easy on the eye while reading.
COLORS
I selected complimentary shades of blue for my site to represent my brand. The color blue represents both the sky and the sea and is associated with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity. The color blue communicates significance, importance, and confidence without creating somber or sinister feelings. Blue also represents meanings of depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, and intelligence. The hex color codes are: #092D6F #43639F, #A5B9D6.
SITE DESIGN
I created my site to represent who I am and the talents God has gifted me. You will find a cohesive layout, representing skills I acquired in my coursework at MBU. You will also see pictures I have taken and MBU Timeline articles I have written, edited and designed. Most of all you will see unique little effects in the site which are intended to reflect my creativity, fun, and the skills I have developed in my time at MBU. Shine on!
RESPONSIVE
My site is responsive, which means it is optimized for viewing on not just desktop but also on tablets and mobile devices.
PARALLAX EFFECT
Parallax scrolling is a computer graphics technique used by web designers to create a faux-3D effect. As users scroll down a webpage, different layers of content or backgrounds move at different speeds, and this creates an optical illusion. I used this technique to convey creativity.
